Green Kumbh initiative must continue even after the mela, says Swami Chidanand Saraswati

Even as lakhs of devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam on Paush Purnima on Sunday, Swami Chidanand Saraswati of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, the force behind the Clean Ganga campaign, expressed his satisfaction over the ongoing ‘Green Kumbh’ initiative. Terming it a “great beginning” to a clean and green Ganga, the organiser said the change was visible on the second ritual bathing of this Kumbh.

The district administration, Green Kalam and Mohamed Sathak Trust launched a mega campaign to plant one lakh saplings, with Collector K. Nanthakumar planting the first sapling at the Collectorate complex here on Monday.

Hundreds of school students also planted saplings at 50 designated sites across the district. Actor Vivekh, founder of Green Kalam, Deputy Inspector General of Police M. Ramasubramani, Superintendent of Police N. M. Mylvahanan and S.M. Hamid Abdul Quadir, Chairman of Mohamed Sathak College, were present when the Collector launched the event.

Laying stress on conservation and protection of rich bio-diversity of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today emphasized the need for rejuvenating the depleted forests and raising massive plantation on vacant available areas.

"Protection of forest wealth and rejuvenation of degraded forests are all the more necessary to maintain ecology, restrict climate change, save water bodies and fauna and flora of the State", he said asking for full utilization of Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) initiative in this regard.

BHADRAK: Minister of forest and environment Bijayshree Routray said community forestry should be taken up in at least 150 hectares of forest land in rural areas of Bhadrak district.

The state government's ambitious tree plantation drive started last monsoon has gone bust even after the target was revised.

The Forest Department will launch a special drive to increase green cover and eradicate lantana weed in the hill state. Forest Minister Thakur Singh Bharmauri today said the drive would initially start from Rampur and Chamba forest circles and later be extended to other parts of the state.

The department would also work on war-footing to remove lantana and other obnoxious weeds and plant fodder species for the benefit of sheep breeders and farming community.

In what can be called as a rare inititaive by an Assamese, this man from Dobia Borigaon in Gohpur sub-division started what can be called as a green revolution in this part of the country to fight the rage of global warming. He went on to popularize his concept not just in India but his experiments have been replicated in countries like England, France, Nepal, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

He did not buy gifts for his friend on their birthdays when he was young. Rather, he opted to spread the cover of green and gift them saplings. And he kept this practice alive as he grew up, only to expand it in a different magnitude altogether.
