Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said 20 squads are on the job to check illegal mining of iron ore and exports and rejected Opposition criticism that there is no let-up in the unlawful activity.

"13 joint squads have been activated. They are keeping a 24-hour vigil and discharging their duties," he told reporters here after a review meeting on the issue.

It is a battle over price of land between the State government and the farmers, whose properties are to be acquired for the construction of 4000-MW thermal power plant, at an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore by the National Thermal Power Corporation, near Kudagi in Basavana Bagewadi taluk in the district.

Raipur: Those who survive the bullets in Bastar, could die of ordinary disease, as the people of Bijapur district discovered, when it took 24 hours for medical help to arrive in seven interior villages gripped by a mysterious diarrhoea like epidemic. By then, 13 people had died, including eight women and three children.

As many as 236 villages in 13 districts of the State have been reeling under acute drinking water shortage. A sum of Rs 19 crore has been released to supply water through tankers to these villages.
