Swedish researchers have launched a scathing attack on the scientific credentials of an international advisory body on biodiversity, warning that its effectiveness is being undermined by the increasing dominance of politicians and professional negotiators. Their concerns about the work of the scientific body that advises the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are widely shared, the convention's own executive secretary, Ahmed Djoghlaf, has told Nature.

Agartala, July 16: The Tripura Government has decided to conduct an extensive survey of the flora and fauna of the state under bio-diversity conservation project funded by the Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC). Experts have identified as many as 31 bio-diversity hotspots in the State, including 21 in South and West Tripura districts.

The Western Ghats are well known for their rich and unique assemblage of flora and fauna. Efforts are on to get this bio-diversity hotspot declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. Radhakrishna Rao reports.

Many traditional conservation ethics of people directly or indirectly protect forest patches by dedicating them to local deities. Such forest pockets, referred to as sacred groves, are more or less small to large chunk of traditionally maintained near virgin forests protected on socio cultural grounds. Named differently in different states of India, these groves are mainly concentrated in tribal areas and are managed by local people for various purposes.

To conserve the representative ecosystems, a Biosphere Reserve program is being implemented. Ten biodiversity rich areas of the country have been designated as Biosphere Reserves applying the UNESCO/MAB criteria.

This article employs multiple methods to uncover how competing conceptions of nature, manifest through discourses of nature, influence ideas of how the reserve should be managed.

The NGO has been playing a leading role in promoting organic farming DEHRA DUN: Anil Rana director Janhit Foundation a Meerut based NGO has bagged the prestigious One World Award for his untiring efforts for conservation of biodiversity and nature in Western Uttar Pradesh. The award was presented to Mr Rana at Modena ( Italy) recently by Renate Kunast, the former Agriculture Minister of Germany. The One World Award has been instituted this year by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements ( IFOAM) and Rapunzel, both German organisations.
