UNDER the much-hyped 100-days programme of the UPA government, the shipping ministry has proposed to award a contract for six port projects costing Rs 3,319 crore on a public private partnership (PPP) basis.

Ranchi, June 30: National highways passing through Maoist dominated corridors of Jharkhand are set to get a major facelift, courtesy a Rs 750-crore plan approved by the Union ministry of road transport and highways.

Better road infrastructure in North-Eastern States, an all-weather highway link for Kashmir Valley and speedy clearance of projects are the top priorities for the Government in the first 100 days.

The construction of an alternative highway in land-locked Sikkim is expected to begin within the next six months, the State Government said today.

Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Kamal Nath directed his officials yesterday to expeditiously start the ground work for construction of the alternative highway within the next six months, an official release said here.

With a large number of road development projects facing a resource crunch as well as cost overrun and delay in completion in many cases, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry is seeking to double its budgetary allocation for smooth functioning.
