Temperate climatic condition of Kashmir is well suited for bivoltine sericulture. The sericulture in Kashmir valley sustains on tree type of mulberry. These plants are available on roadside, river bund and the borders of agricultural fields as they can grow under
diverse climatic conditions. The present trend is towards establishing intensive tree type of mulberry plantations, which will serve as a source of leaf for the rearers and will have positive effect on the environment.

Sericulture, a combination of agriculture, forestry and industry, is both an art and science of rearing silkworms for silk production. Sericultural practices constitute an important livelihood support system for 66 lakh families in rural India.

Mulberry sericulture is a labour-intensive industry in all its phases, namely, cultivation of silkworm food plants, silkworm rearing, silk reeling and other post cocoon processes. In the global context, silk accounts for about 0.2 per cent of total textile fiber production. However, in value terms, silk stands for high value export oriented items in the world trade.
