KOHIMA: Nagaland State has earned the unenviable position of being ranked second among Indian states in terms of tobacco consumption, next to another small North-eastern State Mizoram.

According to latest survey conducted by Global Adult Tobacco, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), every second man and every third women in Nagaland is addicted to tobacco.

Agartala: The Central government has provided additional quota of rice at a subsidized rate for the poor living in 12 backward districts in the Northeast, a State government official said here on Monday.

“The union ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution on the direction of the Supreme Court has allocated additional quota of food grain to identified 174 districts in 27 States, which include 12 districts in Northeast region,” said Tripura Principal Secretary (food department) BK Roy.

Kohima: A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Nagaland and three other north-eastern States in the wee hours of Sunday triggering panic. No casualties have been reported.

According to Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the quake occurred at 1.25 am. The epicentre was in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. The tremor was felt in almost all the districts of Nagaland. Besides Nagaland and Manipur, tremors were felt in Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Shillong, July 15: The city was awakened by a “moderate intensity” earthquake just after midnight last night although there were no reports of any damage to human life or property.

Agartala: The first unit of ONGC-Tripura Power Corporation’s 726 MW gas-based power plant at Palatana in southern Tripura will start generation by September, officials said here on Monday.

On Monday, ONGC started supplying natural gas to the plant through a 54 km-long pipeline. Before the commercial generation of electricity from the unit, trial runs would be conducted during this month-end, ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited (OTPC) Managing Director, Sudhindra Kumar Dube said.

The death toll in the Assam floods has gone up to 61, while landslips have claimed the lives of 16. Besides, 10 others were reported missing in four districts. Of the 16 landslip deaths, 10 died in the city and six in Dima Hasao district.

An earthquake of5.8 magnitude, with its epicenter at Phek in Nagaland, rocked the State on Sunday around 9.44 a.m. There was, however, no report of any damage.

Panic prevailed in north-eastern states as two earthquakes of moderate intensity rocked Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura on Sunday.

There was no report of any loss of life or damage from any part of the region. The India Meteorological Centre, Shillong, said that magnitude of the earthquake was 4.8 on the Richter Scale while its epicentre was located at 28.7 degrees north latitude and 96.2 degrees east longitude in the Arunachal Pradesh-Xizang border region. It was at a focal depth of about 10 km.
