The Rabies Vaccine Production Laboratory of the Animal Health Directorate looks set to make Nepal self-dependent in the rabies vaccine for humans as well as animals. It has completed production of the ninth batch of the vaccine.

BEWARE of Dogs! There is a shortage of anti-rabies vaccine in the country, thanks to the dispute between Novartis and Sanofi Aventis that together control over 80% of the anti-rabies vaccine market.

A Chinese city has killed 36,000 stray and pet dogs in a bid to wipe out rabies, state media said on Tuesday, as the country considers a draft law recognizing animal rights and making such a cull illegal.

Rabies has killed 12 people in Hanzhong, in the northern province of Shaanxi, where more than 6,000 people had been bitten or scratched since late May, the China Daily said.

With 12 out of about 130 drug samples in 2007-08 failing laboratory tests, the quality of drugs for humans and livestock animals supplied in Bhutan is under a cloud of questions.

Ahmedabad: To ensure that the large number of dog bite victims get effective and affordable treatment, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will soon introduce World Health Organization (WHO)-approved vaccines.

Ahead of the Esala season, the Blue Paw Trust (BPT) together with the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha have made arrangements to eradicate rabies from the sacred city through vaccinating and sterilizing stray dogs. The program will be held during the second week of June.

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will provide intra dermal anti-rabies vaccine at 12 health centres in the city. Unlike the old vaccine, which is injected in the muscle, the new vaccine is injected under the topmost layer of the skin.

Private hospitals are already using the new vaccine, but it is for the first time that it will be used at a public health centre in India.
