The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commissioned several projects in Delta State worth N5.2 billion. The projects, which were mostly roads were commissioned at the weekend.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,000 crore and it would require the diversion of forest land of 21.5 ha, the area under the SGNP.

Roads can be arteries that ferry goods and people, connect communities and markets and bolster economic development.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Society for Preservation of Kasauli and its Environs (SPOKE) Vs. Barog Heights Hotel dated 04/10/2017 regarding illegal construction in the hill town of Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. The case relates to the 1.5 km long road from the highway to the Barog Hotel. The counsel appearing for the State of Himachal Pradesh submits that the records of this case are not available with any Department of the State Government and no inquiry etc. was pending with them. Roadway design aims to maximize functionality, safety, and longevity. The materials used for construction, however, are often selected on the assumption of a stationary climate. Anthropogenic climate change may therefore result in rapid infrastructure failure and, consequently, increased maintenance costs, particularly for paved roads where temperature is a key determinant for material selection.

Counsels appearing for the State of Uttarakhand and Border Roads Organisation submit that they would carry out the project and during the implementation of the project, they would ensure that no muck is thrown either into the river, water bodies and/or in the forest or green area down the hill or otherwise.

The proposal stated that it is a greenfield alignment and will reduce travel time, fuel consumption, vehicle operation and maintenance cost in comparison to the existing alternatives
