The Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh launched a drive to ensure the farmers that the policy of free electricity to the agriculture sector will continue for another five years.

CHENNAI: The Rs.447.41-crore rural electrification project, aimed at benefiting nearly 5.25 lakh below-the-poverty-line households (BPLHH) spread over 27 districts, was launched at Kollumedu village, about 30 km north of Chennai, on Tuesday.

In the initial phase, about 54,000 households will be covered by March-end. The project is expected to be completed by December.

Rural women battling fumes and smoke from burning of biomass like wood, crop waste and animal dung during cooking may soon get some respite.

Envirofit International, an US-based non-profit organisation, has introduced a range of clean-burning and biomass-based cooking stoves , which are reaching homes in rural Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

They would help agriculturists during the next rabi season

JAIPUR: Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam has set a target of releasing 23,000 new agricultural power connections in 12 districts of Rajasthan falling in its jurisdiction and decided to speed up the issue of connections from next month.

Jaipur Discom Chairman and Managing Director R.G. Gupta said here on Wednesday that 25,676 demand notices were issued to farmers in April in addition to 4,437 pending since the previous financial year. Of the 23,047 new connections to be released this year, 2,037 have already been issued.

The burning of biomass fuels results in exposure to high levels of indoor air pollution, with consequent health effects. Possible interventions to reduce the exposure include changing cooking practices and introduction of smoke-free stoves supported by health education. Social, cultural and financial constraints are major challenges to implementation and success of interventions.

Groups of women in Zambia started providing energy services like battery charging, irrigation, milling and welding, to the community by using a replacing diesel with jatropha oil that they produce themselves.

Recent technological developments in biomass have made it possible to deploy various biomass-based systems for meeting total energy requirements of villages in an efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manner. Modern biomass technologies offer considerable effi ciency gains over traditional biomass use.
