The challenge will only become stiffer as projected sewage generation by 2021 is likely to be about 4,500 mld.

New Delhi: About 19 years ago, the Supreme Court first scrutinized pollution in the Yamuna.

The inordinate delay in the integrated sanitation improvement project work may prove costly for the city.

The pollution load on rivers has increased over the years due to rapid urbanization and industrialization as also due to abstraction of water for irrigation, drinking, industrial use, power etc. Disposal of untreated/partially treated sewage generated in the cities and towns are also a major source of pollution in the river.

The Centre for Science and Environment is organizing the Anil Agarwal Dialogue 2013: Excreta Does Matter, on urban India’s water supply and waste management challenges.

The Inter Ministerial Group was constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests last year and was tasked with suggesting an environmental flow for various stretches of the Bhagirathi, the Alaknanda and other tributaries of the Ganga, and to review the environmental impacts of projects proposed on these rivers.

Management of solid or liquid wastes in rural areas is much easier and profitable business than in urban areas due to the fact that it is mostly organic in nature and does not contain toxic compounds. In rural areas, waste can be safely reused for beneficial purposes with limited resources.

The 500-yr-old water body was developed by Kempegowda

From a distance, the historic Dorekere may look like a slice right out of Singapore with its brimming pristine water mirroring the skyscrapers surrounding it, thanks to the lake rejuvenation programme of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). But the lake wasn’t so a month ago. Weeds had choked it, despite several measures taken by the civic body. BBMP engineers, however, fear their efforts to give the water body a new lease of life would turn futile as sewage poses a perenial threat.

The Maha Kumbh in Allahabad has perhaps no parallel in terms of the sheer size of the congregation. In less than two months over 100 million people are expected to come to this city, at the confluence of the Ganga and the Yamuna. But even as they celebrate the rivers it seems they don’t see the rivers, but only the ritual.

This mela is about how the Hindu religion — and I believe all religions — is based on a deep understanding of and respect for nature’s strength. But we now worship without reason. So people can take a dip in the polluted river but still believe that the dirt, the filth and the plastic that swims around them will not defile the river’s properties. Our strength has become our weakness.

Pune: The environment department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) came under severe attack from corporators at the civic general body meeting on Monday.

Shiv Sena corporator Ashwini Chinchwade Patil had sought to know the functioning of the environment department, environment conservation works implemented, if the civic body had taken any action on the annual Environment Status Reports (ESR), functioning of sewage treatment plants (STP), among other things.
