Those who believe that their children are safe from the harmful effects of tobacco because they always smoke outside their homes, or inside only when kids are away, need to think about again. A new study has shown that tobacco smoke contamination lingers even after a cigarette has been extinguished.

The ambitious ban on smoking in public places has failed to take off in a majority of states.

The campaign to make Delhi University a smoke-free zone seems to be paying dividends. According to a recent survey conducted on North Campus, some 18.4% boys smoke and a mere 3.3% girls smoke as compared to 23.5% boys and 3.9% girls some five years ago (VPCI survey).

Smoking bans are hardly new

Sales and promotion of tobacco products on the Jagannath University campus will be prohibited, said the university vice-chancellor, Professor Abu Hossain Siddique, at an awareness campaign on Tuesday.

Twelve hundred children between the ages of six and 16 become chain smokers in Pakistan every year, which increases the chances of them falling prey to chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).
