Pictorial health warnings could hurt demand for domestic cigarettes

The demand for tobacco products could fall sharply once tobacco-makers start displaying pictorial health warnings on their products from May 31, to abide by a Supreme Court order on the same issued earlier this month.

New Delhi: Just over seven months into the ban on smoking in public places, the habit has been curbed somewhat but not tamed, government Health department officials have said.

Bulgarian lawmakers voted on Friday to ban smoking in all public spaces from June 2010, ignoring protests from tobacco producers and the tourist industry in Europe's number two smoker.

The Black Sea country has already banned smoking in hospitals, taxis and offices and requires restaurant and bar owners to designate non-smoking areas, but the measures have been widely ignored.
