The Assam Government has sent out a red alert across the flood-prone districts, following a breach of embankment on the swelling Brahmaputra river in Upper Assam on Wednesday.

State Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman said at least 80 villages have been engulfed by gushing waters, rendering over one lakh people homeless in the Lakhimpur district.

A minor phase of the Majuli Island protection project executed by Brahmaputra Board is expected to be completed next year, chairman of the Board Rajen Nair said. The Project is part of the long-term project sanctioned in 2005. The Brahmaputra Board prepared Detailed Project Report amounting to Rs.86.56 crore for protection of Majuli Island from flood and erosion.
