GUWAHATI, March 30

The Conservation Reserve, which pays owners to idle fragile U.S. farmland, could become one of the largest carbon sequestration programs on private land, an Agriculture Department official said on Wednesday.

Pledging its commitment to check infiltration and implement the Assam Accord within a timeframe, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today formally released its election manifesto, enlisting all-round development of different ethnic tribes, flood and erosion control, political settlement of militancy, tackling fundamentalism and boosting of the agriculture sector as some of its priority areas.

Mumbai: Mahim beach once had a prominent shoreline, stretching from Mahim Fort to Mahim market. The shoreline has narrowed over the last decade owing to frantic reclamation, angering local residents, who have now got together to form a forum to save the beach from being reclaimed further.

Waterlogging has emerged as a big problem in the Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh as it adversely affects agriculture productivity. Attempts made by various departments, organisations and agencies so far for prevention of flood and waterlogging and reclamation of the degraded land have been disjointed and have had little impact.
