Despite its limitations, the global growth rate of solar photo voltaic installations has spurted.

Those who dislike nuclear energy because of its safety problems strongly tout solar energy as a clean and renewable alternate for India. India experiences clear sunny weather for over 250 days a year, with the average daily solar energy incident over the country being as high as 5.8 kilowatt-hours per square metre, With a land area of roughly 3 million sq km, this translates to a total energy incidence of 6000 trillion units/year (1 unit = 1 kilowatt hour).

Hyderabad, July 20: The state is vying for a mega solar energy plant proposed by the Clinton Foundation in the United States. The plant, which will come up in 25,000 acres with an investment of $20 billion, is expected to generate 5,000 MW of power using various ways of tapping solar energy. Official sources told this newspaper that a delegation of the foundation led by international head Ira Magaziner was recently shown suitable area in the perennially drought hit Anantapur district.

Hyderabad, July 13: With increasing power shortage, state government at last has started looking at non-conventional energy sources like solar and wind power to ease the burden on traditional power generation. From existing 2 MW capacity of wind mills, state government has finalised plans for 1000 MW in coming five years period.

Tripura Renewable Energy Agency (TREA) has adopted an ambitious plan for producing low-cost electricity. As part of the plan, one solar hybrid project has been installed on top of the Vigyan Bhavan recently. The project that was established at a cost of Rs 5 lakh is unique in nature as it uses both wind and sunlight to generate power. The project has been producing two-kilo watt power each day by using wind as well as Sun, said Subhash Chowdhury, Director of TREA here on Tuesday.
