The state government has been sitting on a proposal that would allow the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to rate buildings according to whether they follow green norms. The BMC had planned to introduce the rating system for residential, commercial, government and other projects from this April.

Mumbai: After years of haphazard development that has turned much of the city into an eyesore for greens, developers are now looking at getting an environmentally friendly tag for their projects.

Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, was informed here on Wednesday that a revised one MGD treatment plant for domestic wastewater has been designed by water technologist Dr Mohammad Ahsan Siddiqui of Industrial Development (ID) for Kotri city and submitted to Sindh government by Public Health Engineering (PHE).

In certain areas of Varanasi city, waste water from Dinapur sewage treatment plant is used for irrigating vegetable plots. We quantified the concentrations of heavy metals, viz. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soil, vegetables and the waste water used for irrigation. The waste water used for irrigation had the highest concentration of Zn followed by Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu and Cd.

Rapid and alarming deterioration in natural environment has become a matter of great concern for the entire globe. Exploding population, industrialization, man-made pollution, loss of forests, etc are responsible for this disastrous ecological scenario. Carbon dioxide emissions are at historic highs and rising. Bamboo is emerged as a way out to effectively combat these problems.

Landscape irrigation system is a combination of different irrigation system as suitable for various crop covering and requirement. Some misconceptions and doubts are still rising in the mind of the many people about using waste/ETP water for landscape.

The State government will encourage industries to use treated water for their use in the coming days. A measure resorted to by the Department of Industries and Commerce following the difficulty in fulfiling water requirement of industries in the State.

Water availability per capita in India is reaching critical levels, and with a much faster pace of urbanisation expected in the coming decades, treatment of waste water for returning to rivers and reuse in industry assumes great importance. Navi Mumbai has shown the way. Today the population of Navi Mumbai stands at 1.2 million, and is expected to double by 2031.
