The Sindh High Court Sukkur bench has directed the Sindh Environment Department to test the quality of drinking water being supplied in Sukkur and submit a report within a week. The bench, comprising Justice Dr Rana Mohammad Shamim and Justice Farrukh Zia G. Shaikh, issued these directives on Wednesday, on a petition filed by a Sukkur-based journalist, Lala Asad Pathan, through his lawyer, Ghulam Shabbir Shar, stating that the water being supplied in Sukkur was contaminated and unfit for human consumption.

About five short-snouted seahorses, (Hippocampus hippocampus) have been spotted during routine conservation surveys, leading scientists to think they have probably established a resident population. The news has been kept secret until now because the seahorse has not been protected. But from Monday, the marine creature and its environment will have protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

The biological index of pollution (BIP) which hinges on the responses of aquatic biota to pollution of water sources was used to assess the quality of some water sources in Zaria area, Nigeria. Water samples were collected from 15 stations comprising three open water sources (lakes) and twelve hand-dug wells on a monthly basis for a period of 24 months. Ten liters of the samples from wells were concentrated to 50 ml by filtering through 70 meshes per cm2 plankton net. Collections from the lakes was by means of dragging net over a 3 meter distance in the water.
