A fact-finding study on the pollution of the city’s rivers and its impact on biodiversity is underway.
The newly formed biodiversity committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) which met last week decided to take up the survey. Members of the committee include civic officials working on environmental issues and a few corporators. At present, the Mutha river’s survey is being carried out.

Only 13 Out Of 27 Units Operational: PMC

Pune: Only 50% of the biogas plants set up in the city with an aim to decentralize garbage processing system are functioning.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has 27 biogas plants with a joint capacity to process about 133 tonne garbage.At present,only 65tonne is processed in 13 plants which are functional.

The city’s much talked about 24x7 water supply and water meter scheme may see the light of the day finally, with its pilot project making some progress. After three unsuccessful attempts, the civic body has received response from five bidders for the tender it issued to undertake the project.

The Union government on Thursday approved the procurement of 500 buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

Pune: Within a month of taking a decision to demolish all illegal mobile towers on municipal buildings, the civic corporation is now reconsidering its stand against them.

Pune Bachao Samiti - a citizens' group has decided to approach the national green tribunal to raise issues pertaining to the development plan (DP) for the old city areas.

"The committee has several objections regarding details given in the development plan about the existing land use and proposed land use. Our objections are related to infrastructure such as roads and water bodies, which are going to impact the environment. So the committee have decided to raise these issues before the national green tribunal," said the members of the committee, while speaking to reporters.

Power Use Contributes 56.38% Of Total Release, Per Capita Emission Bit Lower Than National Average

Pune: The first-ever carbon footprint report for Pune has revealed that the city emitted over 46 lakh metric tonnes of the gas in 2010-2011. The per capita carbon release in the city is around 1.46 metric tonnes, which is slightly lower than the national average of around 1.5 metric tonnes. However, the per capita emission is way below that of several western countries — for instance, the per capita release in the US is around 17.3 metric tonnes.

PUNE: The PMC has planned a ward-level water management system to address the problems in water supply in view of the water scarcity. A series of meetings with all political parties have been scheduled to discuss the initiative.

"Though there are some major issues in water management, some problems are very local and do not get addressed at the general body meetings usually. But solving these problems is very important. So, the administration has decided to start special meetings at ward level," a senior official from the water department told TOI.

Pune: Only 35 out of the approximate 10,000 buildings constructed in the city in the last five years have received the status of an ecofriendly structure.

The civic body adopted the ecohousing policy in 2008 to promote environmental, economic, health and safety benefits that come with such buildings. The policy plans to educate developers, architects as well as buyers to change the city's scenario and to create awareness about such homes. As per the PMC officials, on an average nearly 2,000 building permissions are issued by the PMC each year. Considering this, permissions to around 10,000 buildings have been given in the city in the last five years.

PMC’s Kondhwa Facility Upgraded

Pune:If you eat a pav bhaji at your local favourite joint and don’t find it palatable, take a sample of it to the food testing facility in Kondhwa to know if it’s consumable. Started by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) at Salunke Vihar in Kondhwa a year back, the lab so far had limited use. “It was designed primarily for testing meat at the Kondhwa slaughterhouse. Since it is well equipped, the lab can be used by common people. Anybody can go there with the food sample and ask for a test to be conducted. The lab will provide the details,” said PMC heal officer S T Pardeshi.
