The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has been implementing an ambitious programme of pollution abatement of rivers in India. It started in 1985 with the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) and gradually extended to other polluted rivers through National River Conservation Plan (NRCP).

The Ministry of Environment and Forests notified the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010. These Rules, which for the first time lay down legally enforceable provisions for the conservation and management of Wetlands, have been drafted to ensure better conservation and management and to prevent further degradation of existing wetlands in India.

Conservation efforts often focus on large and charismatic animals such as the tiger and elephant that are undoubtedly in urgent need of protection. Hwever, there are a host of species that do not rank very high on the conservation totem pole, although they are also under great threat and are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

The discussion paper on National Environment Assessment and Monitoring Authority proposed by MoEF as an autonomous, multi-disciplinary appraisal and monitoring agency.

 

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has sought environmental clearance for 6x1650 MW power generating complex to be implemented in phases at village Madban in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. NPCIL has signed an agreement withe the French company AREVA for establishing this complex which will initially come up with two 1650 MW units.

Ministers and representatives from 35 countries, regional groupings and UN organisations met in New Delhi and have called for an agreement on a Technology Mechanism at the COP-15 in Cancun. The Ministerial was hosted jointly by the Governments of India and Mexico and UNDESA.

This new report prepared by INCCA, provides an assessment of impact of climate change in 2030s on four key sectors of the Indian economy, namely Agriculture, Water, Natural Ecosystems & Biodiversity and Health in four climate sensitive regions of India, namely the Himalayan region, the Western Ghats, the Coastal Area and the North-East Region.

Prior clearance under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification is to be obtained for those projects that are listed in the CRZ Notification, 1991 as amended from time to time and fall within the approved Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) of the respective State/Union territory.
