Gorakhpur nuclear plant inauguration on Jan 13

When Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives in Gorakhpur of Fatehabad district to inaugurate Haryana’s first nuclear power station, he is likely to be greeted by determined environmentalists opposed to the plant.

About an hour's drive from the industrial city of Hisar, a village with rich fertile land spread across hundreds of acres is awaiting a rebirth. Ask anyone in Gorakhpur about their future, most will reply with a hint of what is predestined: "parmanu yug (nuclear age) has come."

Yet there are doubters with concerns as serious as the future of the crops and the water the village drinks when the 4X700 MW nuclear plant comes up. The plant has already got the conditional environmental go-ahead from the Centre.

NPCIL already awaits important clearances from Centre

Even as the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) awaits some important clearances from the Centre prior to the formal launch of Haryana's first nuclear power project at Gorakhpur in Fatehabad, anti-nuclear power forces have also started mobilising against the project.

Development at the cost of life seems to be the mantra of the government. As many as 19,348 trees will be cut for the four-laning of state highways 6 and 7 (Karnal-Ladwa-Yamunanagar road).

The Public Works Department (Buildings and Roads) has been granted permission to cut trees, but there is no mention of how the cutting of trees will be compensated.

As many as 1,240 samples of drinking water in five districts-- Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Kaithal and Yamunanagar-- have failed purity tests in the last one year. They were not found safe as per the parameters.

As per the report of the Intermediate Reference Laboratory (IRL), out of the 2,772 samples collected from Karnal, Kurukshertra, Panipat, Kaithal and Yamunanagar districts, only 1,532 were found fit for drinking.

Demand redressal of wildlife conservation issue

Animal rights activists belonging to the Bishnoi community are up in arms against the government’s proposal to lay the foundation stone of the proposed nuclear power project at Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad before implementing any conservation plan for hundreds of wildlife, particularly blackbucks living in the area.

Prime Minister to lay foundation stone

Tomorrow, Haryana will emerge on the global strategic map when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh lays the foundation stone of the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership.

Seven-year-old Anjali, a frail girl walking with a bucket of sewage and waste water for discharging it in an open field, is a pitiful sight.

This has become the fate of several others at Bhagpati village and adjoining areas, where the residents have been forced to become a scavenger, flushing out dirty water four times a day.
