Coal India, the country's largest coal producer, is set to import about four million tonnes of coal in the current financial year ending March 2009, even as coal ministry claims that the country has sufficient coal to meet its need.

TO TIDE over coal shortage faced by power producers, ministry of coal and Coal India (CIL) are taking various measures, including import of coal and exploitation of more mines for captive use. While government has identified about 75 coal and 20 lignite blocks for captive use, CIL is planning to import coal for the first time this year.

Ranchi, Aug. 31: The Union minister of state for coal Santosh Bagrodia today remained non-committal on a deadline for wage revision of coal executives and employees.

The rapid environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental management plan is beiing prepared for Gare IV/1 coal mine extension, for which MOEF had given permission for three years according to approved mine plan by Ministry of Coal, GOI to meet the increased requirement of sponge iron plant to which this coal blok is captive.

Bangladesh is one of the most electricity deprived nations in the world. Despite large potential for renewable energy sources in Bangladesh, currently their contribution to the electricity supply remains insignificant. Use of renewable energy is considered an indispensable component of sustainable energy systems, as renewables emit less greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel energy systems. However, to advance such sustainable energy systems, appropriate strategies and institutional settings need to be put in place for all nations.

In India, mining is one of the main economic activities since time immemorial, giving rise to a long historical tradition of artisanal mining. As modern mining rose during the colonial occupation, artisanal mining activities began to be overlooked and this great tradition became obscure.
