There is a general understanding that the potential and prospects of bioenergy in the world depend heavily on advances in cellulosic research. It is however expected that any significant progress on that front will be driven by major technological innovations. Advances in feedstock development and conversion processes will indeed propel the bioenergy industry into a well-secured and competitive future.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, will inaugurate the first corn-based ethanol plant in the coastal Andhra Pradesh at Gandepalli village in Kanchikacharla mandal of Krishna district on Tuesday. The Chief Minister will arrive at Kanchikacharla at 10.15 am and inaugurate the plant which was built at a cost of Rs 130 crore. The plant provides direct employment to 350 people and indirect employment to another 1,000 people. The value-added agro-processing unit will manufacture ethanol from coarse cereals, which is an additive to petrol.

by Larry Rohter When VeraSun Energy inaugurated a new ethanol processing plant last summer in Charles City, Iowa, some of that industry's most prominent boosters showed up. Leaders of the National Corn Growers Association and the Renewable Fuels Association, for instance, came to help cut the ribbon - and so did Senator Barack Obama.

By S Lalitha, DH News Service, Bangalore: To reduce pollution emissions, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) plans to incorporate sophisticated filters and use diesel-ethanol in the 600 buses of the Mysore urban division under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project, an international initiative to preserve the environment. By early September World Bank will sanction Rs 14.3 crore for implementation of the project.

Biofuels have failed to live up to their early environmental promise, but fuels made from plant waste and weeds may turn this around.

Ten years ago, running your car on biofuels meant covertly topping up your tank with chip fat. Now petrol is routinely mixed with ethanol made from corn, and diesel with squeezed rape, oil palm and soya. The current generation of biofuels was rushed onto the market in response to escalating concern in Europe about climate change, and in the US about energy security. But almost before the biofuels industry has got going, it has run into major problems. It has swiftly become a victim of its own success, gobbling up land and water in a way that has frightened the world.

The time has come to act fast to replace, over a reasonable period of time, our dependence on imported crude oil. M. PERIASAMY Jatropha, a plant that can be used to produce bio-diesel, is cultivated on the Karunya University campus in Coimbatore. A file picture.

MUMBAI: Union Minister for Petroleum Murli Deora on Monday approved a price increase for ethanol in Maharashtra which will now be sold at Rs 21.50 a litre. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has been pushing for an increase in the rate for ethanol after a demand from the State's sugar cooperatives and had met the Prime Minister in this regard last week. This decision was taken after a meeting between Mr. Deora and Mr. Deshmukh here on Monday. Proportion
