The Department of Fisheries is implementing nine various development projects to increase fish resource in the district.

Kerala, on the South Western tip of Peninsular India is blessed with the South western and South Eastern monsoon which contributes to its vast fresh water bodies. Among various forms of pollution in water bodies, detergent pollution has an immediate and detrimental effect on the aquatic fauna. Anabas testudineus, a common fresh water fish in Kerala was used in our study to determine the effect of detergent pollution on the fish’s breathing.

Preliminary study by varsity department points to dip in oxygen level in the Karamana

The mass mortality of fish reported from the stretch of the Karamana, near the Thiruvallam and Pallathukadavu ghats last week, could have been caused by the unusual rise in water temperature, reduction in flow and a surge in the concentration of sewage pollution.
A preliminary study conducted by the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, says the mass fish kill was due to an abrupt dip in the dissolved oxygen in water. Head of the Department A. Biju Kumar says the rise in temperature and reduction in water flow coincided with the summer.

MAWPUN: The State Fisheries Research and Training Institute, complete with low cost fibre reinforced plastic hatchery was launched at Mawpun, near Umroi on Thursday. Inaugurating the building and hatchery, State PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar lauded the Fisheries Department for what he termed as a “quality initiative” in the State.
