State Govt mulls tougher laws to check poaching

GUWAHATI, Sept 16: Asom Forest, Environment and Tourism Minister Rockybul Hussain today said the State Government is contemplating on amending the Central Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (specially for Asom) in order to check poaching in the State. The minister said taking the advantage of the holes in the Act, poachers continue to commit crimes even after they are caught and punished.

Govt to clamp ban on tree felling

SHILLONG: The government will soon notify rules for incorporation in the existing Meghalaya Forest Regulation Act 1973 to ban felling of trees for charcoal manufacturing, especially in West Khasi Hills, which is one of the major causes of depletion of the State forest cover.

Villages join hands to combat land degradation

New legislation in India allows communities to take charge of degraded forest areas. One village claimed to have legal rights over a particular forest area. But users from neighbouring villages protested. An external NGO helped the communities to accept each other as legitimate forest users. Jointly, the villages are rehabilitating the area.
