Effluents of thermal power plants contain trace elements and heavy metals, needs remediation before discharging to the environment. Heavy metals tend to bioaccumulate in a biological organism, such as fish and thus enter the human food chain. Present study has been carried out to assess the contamination of water sources in Yellur and surrounding villages closer to a thermal power plant in Udupi district, Karnataka state.

India's Sesa Goa must shut its 280,000 tonnes per annum metallurgical coke unit in western Goa state after complaints of pollution by locals, a State Pollution Board official said on Tuesday.

After a year of partial respite from rising air pollution during last year, the city has seen a sharp rise in the level of air pollutants this year.

Extensive public and private construction and other related activities have led to a a rise in the level air pollution, according to the Environment Status Report (2011-12) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The report also shows that levels of toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) and ammonia (NH3) have increased drastically in all six BMC monitoring sites.

Mumbai Sesa Goa, owned by miner Vedanta Resources, must shut its 280,000 tonnes per year metallurgical coke unit in Goa after complaints about pollution, a State Pollution Board official said. Shares of Sesa Goa extended losses by 3.73% at R180.45 per share on the news.

“We have issued directions for closure of the coke unit of Sesa Goa,” Levinsons Martins, member secretary of the Goa State Control Pollution Board (GSPCB), said. The plant would remain shut at least until then.
