A low intensity earthquake shook a large area in the southeastern part of the city as well as the coastal belt on Tuesday evening. The affected areas included Malir, Jinnah International Airport, Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Ibrahim Hyderi, Sachal Goth, Rehri Goth and Ghaghar Pahttak.

The Karachi Electric Supply Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Oracle Coalfields to set up a major coal-fired power plant at mine-mouth fueled by coal to be mined at Thar Coalfields in Sindh.

The government is to set a model mega CNG station in Karachi at the cost of Rs150.6 million to promote the CNG buses.

The project to be executed by the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) is expected to be operational by the end of 2010.

KARACHI, Nov 12: The Sindh High Court on Thursday directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to place on record measures and mechanisms put in place to check the supply of clean drinking water to Karachi.

A division bench comprising Justices Mushir Alam and Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi was seized with a petition filed by Advocate Islam Hussain, who sought the supply of safe water to the city.

KARACHI, Nov 4: The entire city faced an overall water shortage of 48.5 million gallon per day (mgd) owing to an over 13-hour suspension of power supply to the Dhabeji pumping station, it was stated on Wednesday.

According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, the electricity supply to the phase-2 of the installation was stopped at 7am for some cable repair work and restored at 6pm.

The Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) was planned in 1962 as a goods service linking five important work areas of the city. Subsequently, it was upgraded for commuter use as well. Pakistan Railways now wish to upgrade and expand the circular railway and double-track those parts of it that are single track.

Four cases of dengue fever, three in Patel Hospital Karachi and one in Sindh Government Hospital Saudabad, have been confirmed. Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed stated this on Monday. He said dengue surveillance cell is working in health department with Dr Tariq Shaikh as its focal person. "Health department is ready to cope with dengue virus in a better way as compared to last year," he added.
