KOCHI: Tension prevailed at Vallarpadom when local people protested against the dumping of waste brought in a ship from abroad on Tuesday.

The Kerala Government is implementing major drinking water projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, which will cost Rs 87.16 crore and Rs 201.17 crore respectively.

Approval has also been accorded for sewerage projects, costing Rs 215.41 crore and Rs 74.81 crore respectively, in the two cities, according to an official statement.

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is yet to find an alternative to run the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant. So far no company has submitted tenders for operating the plant. The Hiquip Technologies, which runs the plant on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation (APTDC), will handover the plant to the Kochi Corporation on May 20.

Drinking water shortage in several parts of Kerala, especially in the high and midland areas of many districts, has become so acute that the inhabitants have to depend on water supply by private operators for whom it has turned out to be a lucrative business.
