Natural disasters threaten to trigger widespread damage and distress in emerging economies, many of which are already on the brink because of the global recession, a United Nations body said on Sunday.

Unusually powerful mudslides have killed at least 18 people in the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan this month, the emergencies ministry said on Tuesday.

Landslides happen every year in Tajikistan but they were stronger than usual this spring due to very heavy rainfall. That has added hardship to the mountainous nation of seven million already hit hard by the global economic downturn.

The death toll from floods and mudslides triggered by a typhoon in the northern Philippines has more than doubled to 36, with 12 people still missing, the government said on Sunday.

Itanagar: Unprecedented flood looms large at East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh following reported formation of an artificial reservoir at Tsangpo river in Tibet following a massive blockade due to a landslide on April 27.

According to official sources, people in the district as well as in Jonai sub-division, under Dhemaji district of nearby Assam, were apprehending a flood in the area.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has promised to provide a grant assistance of $25.6 million to help restore economic activity in parts of Nepal devastated by last year's monsoon floods.

More than 300,000 people living in the eastern and far western region of the country were seriously affected by the August floods, and the landslides that followed.
