Sixteen people were killed in a landslide which struck southern Kyrgyzstan, an official from the emergency situations ministry said on Thursday.

Landslide destroyed six houses in the Newazantek village of Booni on Thursday.

Residents of Booni, some 75 kilometres in the north of here, told Dawn by telephone that the houses had already been evacuated when boulders started rolling down from the hill.

The dwellers had been shifted to the nearby Junali Kotch village where they had been lodged in tents.
