Shrinking animal habitat a prime reason for animals to stray into human settlements

GUWAHATI: The committee formed by the Assam Government to come up with suggestions to deal with the man-animal conflict in the State submitted its report to State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain on Tuesday.

Solar fences, early warning systems and trip wire systems are some of the new initiatives that will be in place to reduce man-animal conflict in Valparai plateau.

In this highly conflict-prone zone, where herds of elephant and leopards often stray into human habitations, the Forest Department will provide 20 km of solar power fencing to residential colonies in Valparai and Manambolly ranges to the save lives and crop.

AHMEDABAD: At least nine leopards have been killed by villagers in Saurashtra, Banaskantha and Dang in the last five years. Of these, five were killed in Saurashtra region alone.

"Leopards are being killed in the region where people take care of another big cat - the Asiatic lions. Even if a farmer sees his cattle being attacked by a lion, he would not interfere, but if a leopard is involved, they will attack it," said a senior forest officer.

Ahmedabad: Lions and leopards killed at least 10 persons in Junagadh district in the past one year. The state government has revealed that 1,966 attacks on cattle and 60 attacks on humans have been reported in the same period.

In a written reply to a question by MLA Dhirsinh Barad, the government said that in the 60 attacks, 10 people died and 52 were injured in the year ending January 31.

A majority of Indian wildlife scientists are unable to come together to create a united front to add a much-needed conservation focus to policymaking. In an age when we are trying to balance development with protection of forest areas, wildlife biologists need to actively respond to and engage with situations where the wildlife and conservation angles need to be highlighted. They should make the effort to translate science into policy in conjunction with the bureaucracy and actively work towards creating a much-needed platform for collaboration.

JAMMU: Increasing man-animal conflict was the serious concern of almost all members in State Assembly today during the discussion of grants on Forest and allied departments during second sitting today.

Right from Ch Zulfkar to Engineer Rashid all members showed concern over growing man animal conflict and demanded that efforts should be made to arrest the same.

Kolkata: The deeper you go into the Sunderbans, the more mysterious it is.

Even as Rajasthan’s minister of environment, the flamboyant Bina Kak has expressed apprehension at the rising cases of human-animal conflict, environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan is determined to play down such incidents.

Ms Kak cites the example of four people being killed in Rajathan within a span of three weeks due to man-animal conflict with two of the victims having been mauled to death in Ranthambore National Park.

JORHAT: Incidents of man-leopard conflicts are on the rise in the nearby areas of Gibon wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat district. After a leopard attacked a person in Kathalguri tea estate on Monday, another person was injured in leopard attack yesterday at Meleng tea estate.

During the last one week, dead bodies by two leopards were recovered from New Sonowal tea estate. People suspect that some miscreants might have killed these two leopards by administering poison with food.

ALWAR: The state forest department along with Wildlife Institute of India (WII) would soon be relocating a tigress to Sariska that had strayed into the Sultanpur area of Kota from the Ranthambore tiger reserve.

A team of experts from the WII and the state forest department are camping in Kota to trace the tigress.
