SILCHAR: India’s National AIDS Control Programme has achieved a 50 per cent reduction in new infections over the last 10 years.

Forest cover in the country has decreased by 367 sq km with the green area decreasing in 14 states, says a forest report released here on Wednesday.

According to the India State of Forest Report-2011, forest cover has decreased in 14 states including Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Assam, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Tripura.

However, the forest cover has increased in Bihar, Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka and Andaman & Nicobar.

The forest cover in the country has decreased by 367 sq kms with the green area decreasing in 14 states, as per a forest report released here today.

At least 2300 sq km of Assam’s forest land in areas bordering the neighbouring States is under encroachment.

Aizawl: The Planning Commission, which earlier lauded Mizoram’s New Land Use Policy (NLUP) to support cultivators to shift to permanent farming has sanctioned Rs 370 crore for the programme, it was announced here on Monday.

The Mizoram government launched the Rs 2,873 crore NLUP in 2010 to solve food scarcity by moving away from shifting cultivation to permanent farming, a statement said.

The rising cases of cancer patients in Mizoram has been caused by the excessive use of tobacco products by the people, according to Dr Kuddus Ahmed, secretary of Association of Oncologist of North East India who had commented this earlier in the year in Aizawl.
