PANJIM: Twenty-five percent of children under the age of five in Goa are underweight and 38.2% are anaemic a study by the National Family Health Survey of the Ministry of Health Government of India has revealed.

According to a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, by Krishna Tirath, Minister for Women and Child Development, Goa has fairly good indicators compared to national averages.

Aizawl: Mizoram Geology and Mining Minister S Hiato has alleged the illegal stone quarry near Keifang village was reason behind the massive rockslide at the Aizawl-Champhai road in eastern Mizoram that killed 18 people on July 21.

A bus was travelling from Champhai town to Aizawl. It had almost reached the end of this quarry around 0100 hour when the boulders came crashing down, hitting the rear of the vehicle and leading to the death of 18 people.

KOHIMA: Nagaland State has earned the unenviable position of being ranked second among Indian states in terms of tobacco consumption, next to another small North-eastern State Mizoram.

According to latest survey conducted by Global Adult Tobacco, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), every second man and every third women in Nagaland is addicted to tobacco.

Agartala: The Central government has provided additional quota of rice at a subsidized rate for the poor living in 12 backward districts in the Northeast, a State government official said here on Monday.

“The union ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution on the direction of the Supreme Court has allocated additional quota of food grain to identified 174 districts in 27 States, which include 12 districts in Northeast region,” said Tripura Principal Secretary (food department) BK Roy.

Aizawl: Under its New Land Use Policy (NLUP), Mizoram is laying emphasis on ending the age-old jhum shifting cultivation and has allocated Rs 410 crore in this year’s budget to enable about 30,000 more tribal families to shift to stable farming, a minister said on Tuesday. “In this year’s State budget, Rs 370 crore has been earmarked for the execution of the NLUP.

Under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana, Rs 40 crore has also been sanctioned for the same NLUP,” Mizoram Finance Minister H Liansailova told the State Assembly during its on-going budget session.

SHILLONG: Road links to the northeastern States of Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur and southern Assam remained cut off from the rest of India on Sunday, following massive landslides on a major highway in Meghalaya, an official said Sunday.

The National Highway No 44 at Sonapur and Tongseng in Jaintia Hills district in eastern Meghalaya, bordering Assam has been blocked after heavy rains triggered landslides, with huge boulders covering the road.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has extended loans worth Rs 1,462 cr to the government to fund railways transport services, boost agri-business infrastructure in Bihar and improve road infrastructure in the north-eastern region of the country.

In three separate loan agreements signed between ADB and the government, Rs 750 crore will be used to develop the railway system, Rs 374 crore to improve road connectivity in the north-eastern region and Rs 338 crore will be used to boost agri-business infrastructure in Bihar, an official statement said today.
