High-velocity winds accompanied by hailstorm and an incessant spell of rain for a couple of hours last night damaged the almost ripened wheat crop in villages across Patiala and surrounding areas.

For several months now, Punjab government schools have not received money for the mid-day meal scheme.

Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal has said if the Central Government failed to implement the recommendations made in the MS Swaminathan Committee Report, farmers would stage a protest demonstration in New Delhi on March 9.

Lakhowal made this announcement during an interaction with farmers at the Dukhnivaran Sahib gurdwara, here on Saturday.

THE Supreme Court has directed all state governments to demolish unauthorised constructions on gram sabha lands and evict squatters. A bench comprising Justice Markandeya Katju and Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra asked chief secretaries of States and Union Territories to comply with its order on the issue and file periodical compliance reports. The court decided to monitor the matter.
