Calcutta, Jan. 14: Food and beverage company PepsiCo today announced its decision to pump an additional Rs 250 crore into its factory at Sankrail, Howrah.

PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay manufactures and markets a variety of chips and snacks from the Rs 500-crore unit.

Alipurduar, Jan. 12: More than 23,000 quintals of potato had to be buried after a cold storage owner failed to sell them on the intruction of the State Bank of India (SBI) as part of its loan recovery drive.

LIMA (Reuters) - Scientists around the world have teamed up to sequence the genome of the potato, hoping to crack the genetic code of one of the world's most important crops at a time of surging population growth and high food prices.

Solanum tuberosum, the scientific name of the humble white potato, looks simple. But it is chock full of mysteries hidden in its 12 chromosomes and 840 million DNA base pairs. Humans, by comparison, have 3 billion DNA base pairs.

Due to the suspension of production by PepsiCo India at its plant at Channo village (near Bhawanigarh) in this district, thousands of potato growers are a worried lot nowadays as in present circumstances they are unable to understand whether Pepsi will purchase their next potato crop or not.

Following the conflict between the PepsiCo management and the workers union of the Channo plant over the issue of reinstatement of some suspended employees and one terminated employee due to the agitation by workers at the plant, the Pepsi management suspended production work.
