The endangered clouded leopard seems to have got a new lease of life in the Sipaheejala Sanctuary which has witnessed two births annually of the species whose population has declined to just 31 in India.

The sanctuary is the only conservation breeding project for clouded leopards, sanctuary veterinarian Sajal Das told PTI.

TIRUNELVELI: Researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment, involved in an International Union for Conservation of Nature study of wetlands around the Kalakkad- Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the district have discovered a lake that is used by thousands of birds for nesting and roosting.

GUNTUR, Jan. 4: Proposals for the development and expansion of the Uppalapadu bird sanctuary in Pedakakani mandal of Guntur district is pending for more than one year.

The Uppalapadu bird sanctuary is the only sanctuary in the district. Spread over nine acres of land the bird sanctuary provides refuge to over 10,000 birds from various parts of the world, mostly from Siberia and Australia.

The devastating cyclone Nargis struck the southern part of Myanmar early in May 2008. The delta area of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River was devastated. Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, was also struck. There is an area in the Ayeyarwady delta where the aim is to conserve the mangrove ecosystem. This is the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary.
