As the parks department has failed to save trees from being felled in different areas, the city government imposed on Tuesday a complete ban on felling of trees anywhere in the metropolis, by any civic agency, without its prior approval.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University community comprising teachers, students and karamcharis has launched a campaign under the aegis of Environment Justice Forum to save the trees in front of the office of Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental on the campus.

The Forum claims that these trees, some of them over 150 years old, were being "recklessly and indiscriminately cut' as practice matches for rugby for the Commonwealth Games in 2010 would be held there.

Nepali Congress (NC) Central Office Monday organised a tree plantation ceremony to mark the 26th remembrance day of the party's founding leader late BP Koirala.
On the occasion, NC central leaders and party cadres planted diverse kinds of plants along the Bagmati river banks at Balkhu.

The participants discussed the contribution of late Koirala in the Nepali politics.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi launched "Van Mahotsav-2008' with the Leader of the MCD House Subhash Arya planting a sapling at a sanitary landfill site at Hastsal in West Delhi on Sunday.

The total area of landfill is about 16 acre and while the civic body has developed a park on two acres at the site, the remaining land would be developed into a children park and herbal garden in a phased manner.

The Chairman Garden Committee, Ved Prakash Gupta, was also present on the occasion along with several local residents.

Scores of trees are being felled in Calcutta every month to make way for billboards, according to the West Bengal forest department.

Mumbai, July 18 The tree census 2008 figures may show that the green cover in the city has doubled over the decade, but several tree authority members have contended that 19 lakh trees are inadequate for a city with a population of one crore. A city bursting with development, where highways, malls and skyscrapers are mushrooming everywhere, 19,17,844 trees are still short, they assert.

The Dhaka Club on Thursday kicked off a three-day tree fair on its premises at Shahbagh to make the members' children familiar with fruits and trees of different kinds.
The organisers said that their children living in the city apartments were totally unfamiliar with various local species of fruit and tree plants.
The club president, Sadat Hossain Selim, in presence of former presidents Shamsur Rahman, MG Murtaza, AK Feroz Ahmed, Abdus Sattar and Anwar Kabir inaugurated the fair.

Mumbai, July 16 With the organised efforts of the city's Tree Authority, several rare trees in the city are set to get nameplates. These trees will get a bright green metal plates identifying them by their common and scientific names, in English as well as Marathi.

Recently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) proposed a "green drive" to increase the forest cover of the city in the wake of the Commonwealth Games.

The "Green Action Plan" would see the MCD undertake massive plantation of saplings, transplantation of trees, and the establishment and development of parks around the city. This move has brought cheer to Delhiites, who long for fresh air outside their homes.
