Mumbai, August 27 The BMC has proposed to display the names of the trees on board for easy identification. This has been stated in an affidavit filed by the BMC to the Bombay High Court. The affidavit has been filed by Superintendent of Garden Vijaykumar Dande in response to a PIL challenging the procedure followed for cutting trees in Mumbai.

UN climate talks in Ghana are making progress on ways to help developing nations slow deforestation and have eased disputes over use of greenhouse gas targets for industrial sectors, delegates said on Monday.

"It's moving pretty well now," Yvo de Boer, head of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, told reporters of the Aug. 21-27 talks which are defining the building blocks of a new UN global warming pact meant to be agreed by the end of 2009.

Botanists have re-discovered two critically endangered tree species, earlier considered to be extinct. The trees that originated in southern Kerala have been discovered for the first time in some of the relic primeval evergreen forests of Uttara Kannada district in the Western Ghats.

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, say the discovery is an indication that the primary forest still thrives there.

TIRUCHI: The site of over a 100 million-year-old fossil tree, a geological treasure, in the remote village of Sathanur in Perambalur district will soon be a more hospitable place for visiting tourists and geologists.

Trees covering almost 95 per cent of the around 28,000 acres of forests in Hyderabad have been illegally felled during the last seven years, says a report.

The report, prepared by Hyderabad Forests Conservator Habibullah Nizamani, puts the losses, besides the degradation of the environment owing to deforestation, at over Rs87 million.

Sources said that it was just the tip of the iceberg as the report was based on the position of forest cover in just one district of the province. The situation was also expected to be similar in other districts of the province, they said.

More than one million trees will be planted in Karachi by December this year, City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal said in a statement issued by the city government.

While inspecting trees plantation in various areas of the city, he said that the work to make Karachi green was under way.

He said that the city government had earmarked Rs1.8 billion for the improvement of the city's environment. He directed the officials concern to accelerate the pace of work.

Dhaka University (DU) authorities yesterday began a tree plantation programme on the campus.

Chairman of the afforestation and beautification committee Prof AFM Yusuf Haider inaugurated the programme while planting a few saplings of fruit-bearing trees in the Mokarram Hossain Khandakar Bhaban area on the campus.

Caretaker of the Arboriculture department Prof Hadiuzzaman was present on the occasion.

Talking to The Daily Star, Prof Yusuf said a total of 500 trees will be planted on the campus under the programme.
