Shimla - Alarmed over serious environmental damage at the Kacchi Ghati green belt, the forest department today slapped a penalty of Rs 4.5 lakh on the erring Public Works Department (PWD). The PWD has also been sent written orders to stop the work at the site and take immediate steps to restore the damage already caused to the trees. The Bangladesh Army has undertaken a massive programme to make the National Tree Plantation Campaign-2008 a success. Quarter master general of the Bangladesh Army Lieutenant General M Jahangir Alam Choudhury inaugurated the tree plantation campaign of the army by planting a palm sapling beside the Army Central Mosque on Sunday. Senior army officers were present on the occasion. Later, he offered prayers seeking success of the campaign, said an ISPR release.

The National Fruit-bearing Tree Plantation Fortnight-2008 begins today across the country. This year's theme for the day is "Plant more fruit-bearing saplings, have improved health, nutrition and money." President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed have issued separate messages on the occasion.
