In order to contain the monkey menace in and around the city, the Forest Department is planting saplings of fruit-bearing trees in Basistha area. Sources in the Forest Department said that about a thousand saplings of different fruit-bearing trees had been planted in the area, and plans were afoot to plant more such saplings.

Bangalore: The road widening projects proposed for City by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will now have to go through the scanner of a seven-member Review Committee headed by environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy, to check on its environmental and social sustainability.

Chennai THE GO dated September 3, 2007 of the Environment and Forest Department, which exempted 36 species of trees from the purview of Timber Transit Rules (TTRs) will not be implemented, the Madras High Court was told on Wednesday.

The state government has simplified the procedure of granting permission for cutting trees to get timber wood in villages adjoining government forests. Now tehsildars have been authorised to give permission to the villagers. The maximum limit of cutting of up to two cubic meters in a year has also been abolished.

Bhata land is an important lateritic and well known category of wastelands, which covers extensive area in Chhattisgarh. Sporadic patches of plantations have been raised in this land on experimental basis, for selecting suitable species for taking up large-scale plantations. Present study was carried out in 20-years old plantations at Mohan bhata in Bilspur district.

A changing climate has strong implications for biodiversity changes and impact on the phenology and distribution of species alongwith community composition and ecosystem dynamics. These parameters may be used to find out indicator species to detect the climate change.

In 1929 Sir H.G. Champion, Silviculturist, Forest Research Institute mooted the idea of preservation of elite trees along with establishment of Preservation Plots and resolution No. 22 was passed.

Hyderabad, June 30: What do trees and plants have to do with the research output of an institution? Scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad believe that greenery on their campus is helping them produce more research papers than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. The NGRI has about 16,400 trees on its campus at Habsiguda. It is going to lose about 300 trees to road widening which the institute plans to compensate by planting 4,000 trees.

The present study gives an idea of changes taking place in pollen characteristics of Delonix regia and Peltophorum inerme under the influence of air pollution. Pollen germination, viability, size and pollen tube length were the parameters studied. The reduction in pollen viability and pollen tube length was more significant in P. inerme than D.

Effect of application of biofertilizers, Azospirillum, phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi was studied in a factoral experiment on production of planting propagules (stumps) of teak in nursery. Seed germination was maximum in Azospirillum treatment followed by its combination with AM and PSB after two months.
