Civic Body’s Draft Proposal Lines Up Stringent Installation Rules

MUMBAI: The BMC will not allow more than two cellphone towers to be installed on rooftops.

Putting up cell sites, or mobile phone towers, as they are popularly known, atop residential buildings will now be a tall order.

According to this draft mobile tower policy proposed by the Chandigarh administration, mobile towers will not be allowed to be erected on non-residential buildings.

AHMEDABAD: With the harmful effects of mobile tower microwave radiations becoming a concern in major cities, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) over the past week has been feverishly counting the number of cell towers installed in the city-and looking for their proximity to schools, residential areas and hospitals.

The AMC , the Cellular Operators Association of India (CAOI) and an agency, Indus towers, are toying with the idea of introducing cellular street furniture-which are high masts that will be installed along main streets at close proximity, to cut down on radiation intensity.

Mumbai: The jury is still out on the link between new phones, listening devices and hearing loss, but doctors say they are now seeing patients going deaf in their twenties.

The Rajasthan Government has issued notices to all major mobile phone operators asking them to keep radiation from their towers within the newly prescribed limits. Installation of towers at school buildings, playgrounds, hospitals and within 500 metres of the jail premises has been banned.

State Principal Urban Development and Housing Secretary G. S. Sandhu said here on Sunday that a new policy on mobile phone towers adopted by the State Government had set the limit for radiations emitted by the towers of both 2G and 3G technology to 10 per cent of their previous levels. The policy, which will be in force till the by-laws are framed, has been sent to all urban local bodies.

Jaipur: Telecom operators shut down cell towers situated on school premises in the entire state from 9pm on Monday in compliance with the Rajasthan high court order of August 22.

“The shutting down of 199 towers would affect 35 lakh customers across the state. Among the towers which have been shut down, almost 100 are in state capital itself. In the state there are 40 cities which have single towers and will face complete coverage blackout,” said Sudipto Chowdhury, representative of Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI).
