The National Green Tribunal’s principal bench has restrained a number of State agencies from dumping garbage in the Pallavaram ‘periya eri’.

“The Tribunal is able to see a prima facie case made out for granting an ex-parte ad interim injunction in view of the warranting fact and circumstances. Accordingly, an ex-parte ad interim injunction is granted, restraining R-1 (first respondent) from dumping garbage at Pallavaram ‘periya eri’ until further orders of this Tribunal,” said the Tribunal’s order, dated September 27.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered about 70 industrial units operating inside the “no-development zone” near Kaziranga National Park in Assam to shut down. It has also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh each on the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the state for allowing the units to operate in the restricted zone.

The Public Works Department is now dumping construction debris, ordered to be removed by the National Green Tribunal from the Adyar Creek estuary, in Foreshore Estate, on the beach near Srinivasapuram. Truckloads of debris from the creek is now being dumped on the beach to level it so that the Ganesha idols could be immersed, said a contractor, who has been given the licence to clear the debris from the estuary.
