An environmental scientist’s arrest for granting clearance for a limestone mine in Orissa is the tip of the corruption iceberg that is floating freely in the environment ministry.

A cash stash of `1 crore was allegedly recovered from the Gurgaon and Rohtak premises of Neeraj Kumar Khatri, who works as a deputy director in the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF).

Vehicles with multi-tone horns and sirens are found to be violating noise pollution rules

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Union government to notify standards for sirens and multi-tone horns used by vehicles including those of Government, police or ambulance within three months. The directions were issued by principal bench of Justice A S Naidu and G K Pandey who felt an urgent need to have source specific noise standards, as there were no standards specified by the Union government with regard to use of horns and sirens in ambulances, government and police vehicles.

The orders passed by whisteblower IAS officer Ashok Khemka as Director-General, Land Consolidation, continue to haunt the Hooda government.

Even as the controversy surrounding the fast-tracking of Robert Vadra’s land deals is yet to die down, the fragmentation and privatisation of hundreds of acres in the NCR overlooking the Aravalis, including two villages in Gurgaon and Faridabad, whose consolidation process was denotified by Ashok Khemka on the charges of purchase by a business-politico-bureaucratic-police nexus has come under the scanner of the National Green Tribunal(NGT).

The four-member National Green Tribunal headed by Justice VR Kingaonkar barred the Environment and Forests Ministry from granting any environment clearance to Goa's iron ore mines without its approval, even as it ordered stoppage of all mining at mines whose initial clearance of five years had expired.

But the Tribunal's order has no immediate effect as all mining operations in Goa are already stayed by the Supreme Court since October on a petition filed by Goa Foundation.

‘Need To Regulate Use Of Multi-Tone Horns That Pose A Health Hazard’

Mumbai: Sirens and multitone horns in vehicles that flout the prescribed decibel levels are a serious hazard to citizens, said the national green tribunal in its judgment. The tribunal has directed the police not to allow private vehicles to use such devices in residential areas, silence zones and in the vicinity of educational institutes, hospitals and sensitive areas. It also wants the police not to allow such vehicles during nighttime, except for emergencies.

NOIDA: The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to clarify as to why the width of Hindon River has been reduced to just about 50 metres at the place where a pontoon bridge has been opened temporarily. The tribunal passed this direction while hearing a petition alleging the river has changed its course due to construction of a bridge over it near Raj Nagar in Ghaziabad.

Environmental activists in Ghaziabad had alleged that debris was unabatedly dumped into the Hindon for construction of approach roads for the bridge despite a stay imposed by the tribunal in April 2012.

Fond of making an impression with that extra loud horn in your car? The next time you go for 'pollution under check' (PUC) certification, it is likely you won't get it if your car is found to be too noisy.

Following a PIL, National Green Tribunal has passed an order to curb noise pollution in Delhi, outlining actions that include making noise pollution a compoundable offence.
