The present investigation was undertaken in order to isolate bacteria from eighteen different water samples collected from three different sectors of ‘Chilika’ lagoon of India and to study the resistance against ten different
antibiotics viz., norfloxacin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, neomycin, nalidixic acid, ofloxacin, chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, streptomycin and amoxicillin as well as their serological implications.

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa will soon have two national institutes for studies on wetland eco-systems and turtles.

Chilika is the largest brackish water lake in Asia and also the second largest lake in the world. Chilika is situated between 19º28' and 19º54' North latitude and 85º05' and 85º 38' East longitude. A mix of estuarine, marine and freshwater ecosystem is observed here and the lagoon has a long history of sustainable fishing.

Fisheries, which occupy a prime position amongst all the natural resources of Chilika lake, have started showing signs of recovery after recording low catch for years.

Supporting the livelihood of more than two lakh fisherfolks living in and around the lake, the fish fauna of Chilika Lake is characterized by the composite of freshwater, brackish and marine elements.
