Submission of action taken report by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board pursuant to the National Green Tribunal order dated November 16, 2022 in Original Application No. 817/2022 in the matter of Sandal Parveen Vs Union of India & Others.

Entrenched gender biases and injustices in the coal political economy cannot be wished away with the ongoing shift from coal to renewable energy.

The world's over 3,800 coal-fired power plants are sources of substantial emissions of toxic air pollutants. This study explores people's unequal exposure to air pollution from these coal plants.

In the five years since its launch, the Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP) has become the largest and most important programme at the International Energy Agency (IEA).

This study is a perception survey among 6,000 respondents covering 4,000 organised workers in the supply side (mining) and thermal power plants, and 2,000 unorganised workers in 5 districts of Jharkhand, as well as 26 policy and sectoral experts working at the national and state level.

This publication, the 30th in the series, is an updated and integrated repository of statistics on energy resources and highlights the India’s commitment and the progress made so far in the area of reliable, sustainable and efficient energy systems in the country.

Measures are being taken to control the air pollution due to the loading and unloading of coal by vehicles plying on the Hal road of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) Khadia project at Shakti Nagar, Sonbhadra. This is adjacent to the rehabilitated village of Chilkadand in violation of environmental norms, creating heavy dust pollution and health hazard to local residents.

The Ministry of Power has notified the applicability of Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) to firms constructing coal-based thermal power stations from April 2023 onwards. Under this, the companies will have to set up renewable energy projects of 40 per cent capacity of such coal-fired power stations.

Methane is responsible for around 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution, and rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions are key to limiting near-term global warming and improving air quality.

Tackling methane in the coal sector is a major opportunity for climate action that can also strengthen energy security. Experience shows that there are several steps countries can take today – using existing technologies and tools – that can lead to significant reductions in methane emissions from coal mining.
