Vedanta bauxite project environment clearance rejected

Green cover under threat

Siliguri, July 28: Over 13,000 hectares of forest land has been encroached upon across Bengal, the state forest minister has admitted while expressing apprehension that if the trend continues the man-animal conflict will be on the rise.

Till March 31, 2007, a total of 13,048.376 hectares of forest land had been encroached, according to data available with the forest department.

The state government has planned a major investment in forestry-related activities. Tribal women's SHGs to have bigger role in forest conservation

MUMBAI: In a boost to women's empowerment, the Maharashtra government will now give preference to tribal and rural women's self help groups (SHGs) in handing over forest conservation projects. They will also be given preference in opening micro and small industries based on local forest produce.
