Increase in the global greenhouse gases emission drastically increases the hot weather. Due to mismanagement of waste and natural resources, we have already experienced several warning from global warming and climate change.

Global Water Engineering (GWE) has partnered with Chokyuenyong Industrial in Thailand to cut effluent COD pollution levels at its cassava production plant by more than 95% while extracting gas from its wastewater to power its boilers and generate electricity for its own use and to sell back to the provincial grid.

The treatment techniques used to treating wastewater are based on the knowledge and design application of the treatment process required. This varies depending on the kind of wastewater being treated.

Orient Paper Mills, Amlai is an old integrated pulp and paper mill. There is a continuous effort to reduce water consumption per ton of paper produced. The plant is a pioneer in effectively using the treated effluent for its own plantation through HRTS and do not discharge any coloured effluent in the river.

Total water and environment management in a paper mill is the need of the hour to ensure that the dual needs of lower water consumption as well as eliminating waste discharge are met. This is made possible by having an holistic approach to the problem rather than looking at end of pipe solutions like recycling the total waste water produced etc.

Black liquor management for small and medium mills based on agri-residues is still a problem, though several technologies are developed. One of the non conventional technologies being practiced by many of the mills is Modified Copeland Process.

To achieve the sustainability, many paper mills are shifting from pollution control to pollution prevention through cleaner technology-recycling/reuse water and solid waste and thus reducing pollutants and also to save the energy. Cleaner technology concept starts from pulp mill/deinking plant by controlling pitch/stickies, paper machine to control colloidal, dissolved materials and TOC (Total organic compounds) and finally the effluent treatment.

THE government will make it mandatory for companies to report measures taken to prevent environmental damage as it steps up drive to encourage cleaner production methods.
The ministry of corporate affairs is revising the guidelines on corporate social responsibility (CSR) issued last year to add detailed norms on environmental sustainability.

An attempt has been made to study the feasibility of pharmaceutical (both herbal and bulk drug) wastewater treatment using saline water alga Spirulina platensis. Results showed good reduction in COD/BOD/ sulphates and chlorides.

Toxicity evaluation is an important parameter in wastewater quality monitoring as it provides the complete response of test organisms to all compounds in wastewater. Grab samples of raw and ozonated textile dyeing wastewater was collected from the textile mill in Erode, Tamil Nadu.
