The illegal mining investigator Justice MB Shah Commission has asked the state government to provide the survey and demarcation maps of 29 more iron ore and manganese mines in the state.

“Out of 195 mines, the Commission has received the survey and demarcation of 148 mines. As mentioned in the group plan of existing mining leases of Keonjhar and Sundrgarh districts map this Commission has not received survey and demarcation of 29 leases,” Sudhir S Shah, registrar of the commission, said in a letter to the state steel and mines department.

Mendha Lekha became the first village with Community Forest Rights (CFR) to be given transit passbooks to harvest and sell bamboo in April 2011. Since then other villages in Gadchiroli have applied for and got transit passbooks. Mendha Lekha collected Rs. 93.31 lakh in bamboo sales and has been putting the funds into community development.

Kolkata Steel maker SAIL has decided to outsource development of two huge virgin iron ore mines at Rowghat in Chhattisgarh and Chiria in Jharkhand, a company official has said.

‘‘Rowghat—which will have a capacity of 14 million tonne per annum and Chiria— 15 mt are crucial for SAIL’s capacity expansion,’’ Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) director (raw materials & logistics) AK Pandey told PTI here. ‘‘We have decided to develop these two mines through mine developer-cum-operators. We hope to get a good response in this route being tried for the first time by the company,’’ he said.

A bill will be brought in the next session of Parliament to guide states in completion of digitisation of land records, mutations and maps by 2017 so that individuals can become "conclusive" owners of property, the Lok Sabha was informed today. Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said during Question Hour that computerisation of land records had been completed in almost all states except Bihar, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand.
