It's an odd week for fuel sources. On the heels of a Mountain Dew powered engine, UK supermarket Tesco is getting flack for turning meat into energy-yah, you read that right.

The food chain is burning 5,000 tons of inedible meat for fuel. The biomass processing is being handled by the Cheshire-based PDM Group. The meat-energy is then used to power UK homes via the National Grid.

New Delhi: Looking at various alternatives for the mounting waste lying at Ghazipur landfill site, a delegation from Sweden headed by the Swedish ambassador visited the area on Thursday to see whether this waste could be converted into compressed natural gas (CNG).

The landfill site being developed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at Jaitpur near Badarpur will become operational by December.

The Dhaka City Corporation has taken up an intensified plan to improve collection of solid waste through the monitoring of primary-level waste collection by community-based and non-governmental organisations. Officials at the corporation said the daily garbage was still not dumped in the right place from where the DCC carried the waste to the landfill sites.

Lack of awareness remains a major problem in solid waste management as people in the city and municipal areas continue to dump wastes in an unplanned way. About half of the solid waste generated every day cannot be collected due to their unplanned and haphazard dumping, a major challenge for solid waste management, speakers said at the second Bangladesh Solid Waste Management Conference held in the Sonargaon Hotel on Monday.
