As per disease burden study on Non-Communicable Diseases published by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 2004, the estimated cases of Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) in India was 224 lakh and prevalence of IHD was 37.0 cases per thousand. As per the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the estimated cases of diabetes in India in the age group of 20-70 years are 65.0 million, 66.8 million and 69.1 million respectively in 2013, 2014 & 2015.

We aimed to determine the association of overweight and obesity with the number of years lived with and without diabetes in a middle-aged and elderly population.
