European Union plans to restrict chemical use by farmers in Europe could reduce harvests at a time of global food shortages, farmers, academics, regulators and pesticide makers warned yesterday. Crops such as apples and hops could no longer be grown on the continent if EU draft plans are not amended, they said. Wheat and potato yields could drop by almost a third, according to industry-sponsored research.

The state environment department will come out with a roadmap next month to stop use of toxic colours on idols so that the Hooghly is not polluted during immersion. At a recent meeting of the state pollution control board, researchers and academics had expressed concern about the extent of the problem. Senior government officials and representatives of paint manufacturers attended the meeting.

Ontario said on Tuesday that it will ban the sale and general use of pesticides in what the province said would be among the toughest such environmental laws in North America. Canada's most populous province said the new legislation -- expected to take effect next spring -- would outlaw homeowners' use of lawn and garden pesticides for such things as killing dandelions. Exceptions would be made for golf courses, farms and forests. In Canada, only the province of Quebec has a similar ban, and according to the pesticide industry no US state has a ban in place.

Mercury is a persistent contaminant that biomagnifies up the food web, causing mortality, reproductive failure, and other health effects in predatory wildlife and humans. From 1930 to 1950, industrial mercuric sulfate entered the South River, a tributary of the Shenandoah River in Virginia (United States). To determine whether this mercury concentration had moved into the adjacent terrestrial food web, the researchers anlayzed total mercury concentrations in blood from adults of 13 terrestrial feeding bird species breeding within 50 m of the river.

To study the effects of endosulfan, a mild estrogen-mimic,on survival, growth and reproduction of the model zebrafish Danio rerio, the hatchlings were discretely immersed at selected doses (44–1400 ng/l) for 14 h.

Heavy metal dispersion in groundwaters of Ankaleshwar Industrial Estate, south Gujarat displays colossal temporal variability in both degree and space. In order to facilitate the quantitative measure for site-specific variations, Normalized Difference Dispersal Index (NDDI) maps for five en ironmentally sensitive heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn and Pb) were generated by clutching geochemical analyses and GIS-based raster images.

This communication is the first attempt at contributing to monitoring and systematic gathering of information on the heavy metal profile of the environment, i.e. retrospective study of the environmental metal data (Pb, Fe, Zn, Cd and Ni) of the past 100 years, i.e. 1895
